We all know that “Do Not Touch” is a near universal rule for art. This rule represents a set of beliefs about what art is: fragile, exceptional, removed from ordinary life, and protected from the people who come to see it.

Galan Akin’s work questions these beliefs. His paintings are built to be touched, and he considers changes caused by touch to be a part of the work, rather than damage. Every viewer can become a part of the painting’s history, as the artist and every collector before them have been. Akin’s works are not finished when they leave the studio. They are finished, slowly, by everyone who encounters them.
